Right the Wayne, a campaign opposed to the leasing of more than 3,300 acres of the Wayne National Forest in Ohio, has collected hundreds of petition signatures and more than a thousand protests letters. Among those who filed protest letters in opposition to the leasing were Athens City Council, the Athens County Commissioners and Ohio University President Roderick McDavis.

Citizens are requesting that the Wayne perform an environmental impact statement before releasing land for oil and gas leasing.  This request has the backing of Athens City Council, who this past week passed a resolution showing support for citizens’ request.

Council’s resolution cited a recent study conducted by Ohio University showing public opinion on the topic of fracking. The study revealed that 75 percent of those surveyed felt their quality of life would be negatively impacted by fracking; 69 percent said fracking would not provide a long-term boost to the economy; nearly 76 percent said they felt it would have a negative or extremely negative impact on their personal safety; and 85 percent said they believed fracking would have a negative to extremely negative impact on water.
