CHEJ: Port Clinton Residents Seek Answers

Residents of Port Clinton, Ohio near Lake Erie have been struggling to identify the reasons for high rates of cancer in their community. One possible factor is TCE contamination from an abandoned factory. Standard Products, a rubber and plastic part manufacturer, closed its doors in Port Clinton in the 1990s. Tests have found high levels of TCE contamination at the site. Now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting tests to see if the cancer-causing chemical has leached into the soil beneath residents’ homes.

Recently about a dozen “officials” presented information during a private meeting  held with residents of a trailer park that sits close to the fence line where the contamination is known to exist.  The US EPA will be doing additional sampling to determine if there is a plume of contamination and its extent.

The agency is not revealing the levels of contamination found to date.  This only leads to higher levels of concern among citizens.
