CHEJ: EPA Releases Study On Cancer-Causing Chemical

In a victory for community-based groups across America, this past week EPA announced the finalization of their study on the toxic solvent trichloroethylene (TCE), a ubiquitous chemical found at hundreds of Superfund sites.  The EPA report has been delayed, much like dioxin, for more than 20 years due to intense pressure from the chemical industry.  According to EPA’s Paul Anastas, the new report  “concludes that TCE is carcinogenic to people and poses a human health hazard to the central nervous system, kidney, liver, immune system, male reproductive system, and the developing fetus.”  These findings will most likely affect the clean-up of hundreds of toxic waste sites across the country, especially those with “vapor intrusion” problems. One such community is Port Clinton, Ohio, detailed in the community story below.
