Pew Charitable Trusts: Antibiotics Awareness Campaign

Join the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming’s Moms for Antibiotic Awareness, a group of mothers advocating for the reduction of antibiotic-resistant bacteria through phasing out the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in food animal production.
Doctors commonly warn their patients that antibiotics should be used for bacterial infections, and only taken at the proper dosage for the full course of treatment.  Many industrial farms violate these principles every day by routinely feeding healthy food animals antibiotics over long periods of time in order to promote growth and to compensate for the effects of overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.  In fact, 70 percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are routinely used on industrial farms in healthy food animals.  Unfortunately, this can breed dangerous strains of bacteria that are resistant to these life-saving drugs, and some of them can spread to humans.  As these resistant bacteria multiply, antibiotics that we all depend on to stay healthy become increasingly useless.
The American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization and other leading medical groups all warn that this practice presents a serious and growing threat to human health.  Moreover, children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems like cancer patients are more vulnerable to these types of infections.
If bacteria become resistant to antibiotics they can spread in many ways, including:
• Eating contaminated meat or produce fertilized by contaminated manure.
• Contact with farm or food workers that handle contaminated animals or meat.
• Contact with soil and water that has been polluted by animal waste.
The goal of Moms for Antibiotic Awareness is to raise awareness across the country on this issue and to engage mothers and those concerned about their family’s health to take action for more judicious use of antibiotics.  Participants in the Moms for Antibiotic Awareness campaign will encourage passage of legislation and regulation that would end the routine, non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in food animal production.  In addition, our moms will ask restaurants, supermarkets and other food providers to increase the amount of meat and poultry raised without these life-saving drugs.
Become part of Moms for Antibiotic Awareness and take a stand against the overuse of antibiotics in food animal production and help protect your family from the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
