Directions for Furniture Foam Sample Collection

Dear Colleagues,

We’re up to 75 samples in the study testing couches in peoples homes for hazardous flame retardants like pentaBDE, Firemaster 550 and chlorinated tris. We need 25 more samples within the next week in order to meet our timeline for collecting all 100 samples! Please help us achieve our goal by following the attached simple instructions. Every sample counts, so don’t think yours doesn’t matter. It does. Let me know if you plan to send one, or to urge others in your network to do so.

We expect to find lots of toxic chemicals in these samples, which will give us an excellent tool to message around how the chemical safety net is shredded, chemicals are in our homes that should never have been approved for use, and new replacement chemicals are sliding right through without safety information. We can’t tell which furniture contains these toxic chemicals, because they don’t have to tell us.

On top of making the argument for the need for policy change, we’ll be using the data to urge furniture makers to switch and stop using these dangerous, unnecessary chemicals. Please send your couch sample now, and stay tuned as we get test results and plan for the release of the findings!
