(From the California Department of Public Health) The Work-Related Asthma Prevention Program in the California Department of Public Health is pleased to release a new fact sheet on Cleaning Products and Work-Related Asthma (PDF).  Visit:

This fact sheet summarizes information about how to prevent work-related asthma and other health effects from the use of cleaning products. Key messages in the fact sheet include:
• There are ingredients in some cleaning products that can cause asthma. The fact sheet describes what workers can do if they think they might have work-related asthma.
• Ten percent of all work-related asthma cases identified in California are linked to cleaning products. The fact sheet defines work-related asthma and outlines key statistics in California.
• Half of California’s work-related asthma cases that are connected with cleaning products are among people who did not have asthma before their exposure at work. The fact sheet gives practical steps for asthma prevention, such as using safer work products and methods.
Reducing exposure to harmful chemicals found in cleaning products is particularly important since cleaning products are used in places like schools, hospitals, and restaurants–places where everyone, including children, can be affected by exposure.
