JSOnline: FDA To Reconsider BPA’s Use in Food Packaging

Warning: Chemicals in the packaging, surfaces or contents of many products may cause long-term health effects, including cancers of the breast, brain and testicles; lowered sperm counts, early puberty and other reproductive system defects; diabetes; attention deficit disorder, asthma and autism. A decade ago, the government promised to test these chemicals. It still hasn’t.The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that it is reviewing new studies on bisphenol A and expects to rule by Nov. 30 on whether the chemical is safe for use in food and beverage containers.

The timeline was criticized by some environmental activists who say the government has had more than enough time to consider the chemical’s effects.

“This is bureaucracy at its worst,” said Olga Naidenko, senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group, which has fought for a ban of BPA. “They are working to stall science rather than advance it.”
